Sophie Innisgate still dares to believe there is wonder left in the world, even though the remains of magic now float to earth like dead leaves, and a diviner can hardly be found who isn't using tap water in her scrying bowl. Unfortunately, it's difficult to search for sprites in her birdbath and cloud spirits on the neighbor's roof when she's supposed to be applying to universities. Not to mention the business of getting to know her mother's new (read: latest) fiance.

When her sister goes to study abroad for a term, Sophie rushes to flat-sit for her. She has always loved the quaint mountain town of Davishrow, which has among its assets guaranteed snowfall each winter and a plethora of odd boutiques hidden up every street. The time on her own also promises to give her an opportunity to work on her newly adopted hobby: collecting old magic leaf to making pressing of or arrange in glass as jewelry. The results are beautiful - and make just enough money to live on.

While settling into the flat and meeting her new neighbors, Sophie learns of a Davishrow legend that has yet to escape the town's borders: that of the winterkind, people said to be blessed with the soul of winter within them. Davishrow is a haven to their dwindling numbers, and in return they're said to keep the winters safe and beautiful for the town's residents. But their visits have been few and far between, and the likelihood of Sophie ever meeting one is hopelessly scarce . . .

That is, unless the supposedly haunted flat next door turns out to hold more than just a couple of ghostly insomniacs.
